The Media and Homosexuality

Several years ago, I watched an unsettling “Understanding the Times” video with my senior Current Issues class about Stalin’s media propaganda. (Understanding the Times – by David Nobel – Summit Ministries) He agreed with Lenin that film was a powerful tool that could be used for propaganda. He used film to glorify his policies such as the Five Year Plan and the collectivization of agriculture. He used newsreels to popularize and support the state, which could easily be disguised as news. Stalin also used education as a powerful means of propaganda. The rest is history. He changed the face of a nation by utilizing the powerful tools of media and education.

In our culture, television, music, electronic games and movies have a tremendous role in the development of a worldview. Unfortunately, many children and young adults are more influenced today by what they see and hear than they are by what their parents think and believe. I remember the first time I watched a Will and Grace program on television because I wanted to tape it to share with my Current Issues class to prove the very point I am writing about. I was astounded by the portrayal of a homosexual man. Will was funny and fun to watch, and that show began to introduce homosexuality to a generation of people as fun, normal, and right. It desensitized people, and now we are passing amendments to state that marriage is between a man and a woman because our culture has accepted and believes that marriage between people of the same sex is valid, right, and good.

What does the Bible say? To have a Biblical worldview you must agree with the Bible and live according to those precepts and standards. In Genesis 2, God created a man and then He created a woman because God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” (v.18). He made a woman and gave her to Adam. He did not create another man for Adam. “Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman: that is detestable.” (Leviticus 18:22 NIV) “In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.” (Romans 1:27 NIV)

God created a man and a woman to become one flesh, which is a beautiful picture of the relationship we are to have with our God – the church is His bride and we are to be one with Him. Is it any wonder the world is trying to pervert what God has created as pure and holy and right? Homosexual relationships are unnatural. The way we were designed tells us that. We need to live according to God’s Word, not according to what others would paint as cute, funny and perfect.
